Will Smith is in an enviable position. Entangled in full clinch with Charlize Theron, he's wrestling around for a frisky fight scene on the set of the romantic comedy Hancock. Sweating and grunting, they grapple in the bucket of a fake bulldozer against a green screen, doing take after take for director Peter Berg and a crew of about 50 standing below. It's the film's last week of shooting at Sony's studios in Los Angeles, and Smith's hallmark laugh—confident, flagrant, manchild mirth—is the loudest thing on the soundstage, a pleasing basso profundo. While movie sets like these can become a grind, Smith—playing a down-and-out superhero who hires a publicist (Jason Bateman), only to fall for the flack's wife (Theron)—is churning out DVD extras as he boxes the air, taunts Berg, and keeps Theron in stitches. "Did anyone see Will fall like a girl?" she asks, toppling over in imitation. Finally, on the seventh take of intense tussle, they nail it, so to speak. Smith grins and declares: "That one was kind of soft-porny." Click Here to read more.

Smith denies son's debut
Actor Will Smith has denied rumours that his nine-year-old son is to take on the lead role in a remake of the 1984 classic Karate Kid.
Smith's company Overbrook Entertainment is making the film to be directed by the actor himself, reports contactmusic.com.
A spokesperson for Smith said rumours that Smith's son Jaden taking on the lead role originally reprised by Ralph Macchi is "not true". Smith and his son have co-starred before in the hit Pursuit of Happyness.

In other Will Smith News... Will Smith returned to his hometown to participate in a march against violence. The actor and rapper said he wanted to do something about the violence in the city, which had 380 killings in 2005 and appears likely to top that number this year.
"We're going to take this walk, hopefully draw a little attention to the problem and get some solutions," Smith said Saturday as he walked with his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, in West Philadelphia, along with local officials and members of the community.
The level of violence last week prompted the Philadelphia Daily News to call for the National Guard to patrol city streets.
Gov. Ed Rendell gave Philadelphia a $7.5 million grant for 166,000 hours of police overtime to help deal with gun violence until state police free up 70 city officers by taking over highway patrols.

» Depp Joins Smith in I Am Legend (07.02.06) |
|

comment |

BlackFilm.com reports that "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise star Johnny Depp will join Will Smith in Warner Bros.' I Am Legend, for director Francis Lawrence (Constantine):
When Will Smith was cast as the lead in the long-awaited adapted film version of Richard Matheson's I AM LEGEND, it was probably the worst kept secret. After all, his name had been floating around the web for the longest time. Until certain outlets that folks feel are the bible of information put the word out to confirm our story, sources tell blackfilm.com that along with Smith, JOHNNY DEPP has been added to the cast.
Depp may be playing Ben Cortman, who is Robert Neville's (Smith) neighbor in the film and the first to get infected, becoming the head vampire.
In Richard Matheson's book, Neville is the last living man on Earth... but he is not alone. Every other man, woman, and child has become a vampire, and they are all hungry for Neville's blood. By day, he is the hunter, stalking the sleeping undead through the abandoned ruins of civilization. By night, he barricades himself in his home and prays for the dawn.
The site says filming starts this September.

Info on Will's new movie I Am Legend: Will Smith is looking to get an early start on his new mutant movie, I Am Legend.
The Men In Black star is asking Warner Bros. to begin this summer on the Francis Lawrence-directed flick; it wasn't supposed to start until early next year.
According to Variety, the move would amount to a slot swap with "Tonight, He Comes" in which Smith was slated to star this summer. Gabriele Muccino took over as director of the film that's about the last healthy man battling blood-sucking mutants in New York.

He has become our designated Wise Guy—the cool dude confronting aliens, villains and wary, foxy chicks while armored in nothing more than a knowing attitude and an enviable wardrobe. But Will Smith, 37, is something more than clothes and quips. What we always sense about the Wise Guy is that he's essentially a Sweet Guy, eager to learn, eager to please, eager to be heroically helpful and romantically obliging. He may be our most insinuating movie star and, amid all his studly competitors, the one with the lowest profile. Mostly he lives quietly (with wife Jada Pinkett Smith and his three kids) and works hard.
It could have been otherwise, for he began his public life as a rapper at age 12 and was TV's Fresh Prince of Bel-Air when barely in his 20s. Youthful stardom can be toxic to a performer, but his ambition for better things paradoxically kept him centered. His performance as a kid pretending to be Sidney Poitier's son in the movie version of Six Degrees of Separation made him an actor to be reckoned with, while such roles as the smooth street cop opposite Martin Lawrence in Bad Boys and the edgy rookie to Tommy Lee Jones' seen-it-all alien chaser in Barry Sonnenfeld's great Men in Black, made him a star. Last year's megahit Hitch, in which love—and Smith—conquered all, even the critics, proved his durability. He once said he wanted his career to be both "dazzling" and "eclectic." It's a goal he has pretty much achieved.

 » The Smith's in Jerusalem (04.21.06) |

He never got an invitation and he certainly didn't R.S.V.P., but that didn't stop Will Smith from crashing Atir Cohen's bar mitzvah at Jerusalem's Western Wall.
Cohen, 13, was deep into his Torah reading Thursday when he heard shouting and saw girls pushing against the barrier separating men from women at the holy site to catch a glimpse of the Hollywood superstar.
"At first I didn't know who it was," Cohen said. Smith compensated for the interruption by shaking the bar mitzvah boy's hand and posing for a picture with him.
Surrounded by a security detail, Smith approached the wall and put a note in the cracks in keeping with tradition.
Smith and his wife, Jada Pinkett Smith, then took a tour of an excavated tunnel alongside the wall. The tour leader was Shmuel Rabinovitch, chief rabbi of the holy site, who said the couple took notes and spent several minutes praying.
"He is a very nice man, he was very excited and showed his emotions," he said.
Smith and his wife later visited the nearby Church of the Holy Sepulcher, built on the site where many Christians believe that Jesus was crucified.

» Bow Wow Ends Beef With Will Smith (04.12.06) |

Bow Wow endured a lot of criticism from the media and hip hop fans for aligning himself with the top MCs in rap and the controversial remarks he made about Will Smith in an issue of XXL Magazine months ago.
However, all Bow Wow wants is his fans and the media to be clear about he and Smith and why he felt like he was among the best three MCs in hip hop at the time of his comments.
Bow Wow explained his comments in XXL, in which he said Smith "isn't a real rapper" and was "more of a bubblegum rapper."
"I'm going to be the first person to tell you this, but me and Will Smith had a sit down talk, eye-to-eye," Bow Wow told Vibe.com exclusively Wednesday (April 5). "Me and him (Smith) talked for like 30 minutes in my trailer and we worked it out. We walked out the trailer laughing, cracking up like crazy and that whole thing is deaded."
Bow Wow, who's responsible for the smash single "Fresh Azimiz", cites the truce with Smith as an important step of growing as not only an artist, but a man.
"That's me growing up learning a lot of things," he said. "I felt like it was only right as a man now, looking at me that I talk to another man eye-to-eye, instead of keep going on with the hoopla, so I called Will Smith myself and I respected him for even coming to meet."
Bow Wow also went on to say that he and Smith reached an understanding and hit it off to the point in which the different generation hip hop stars even talked about movie scripts. (vibe.com)
